Bhutan – The Land of the Thunder Dragon
Bhutan, a small Himalayan kingdom, is known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and commitment to happiness. Nestled between India and China, Bhutan remains one of the world’s most untouched destinations, preserving its traditions, environment, and Buddhist heritage. The country follows the philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH), prioritizing well-being over economic growth. Bhutan’s history dates back to the 7th century when Buddhism was introduced. The legendary Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) played a crucial role in spreading Buddhism, and today, it remains deeply rooted in Bhutanese life. The country was unified in the 17th century under Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who established Bhutan’s distinct identity. The capital, Thimphu, blends modern development with tradition, featuring landmarks like the Tashichho Dzong and the Buddha Dordenma Statue. Paro, home to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Monastery), offers a spiritual and scenic experience like no other. Other dzongs (fortresses) in Punakha and Trongsa showcase Bhutan’s architectural brilliance.
