Sri Lanka – The Pearl of the Indian Ocean

Sri Lanka, an island nation in South Asia, has a rich history dating back over 2,500 years. The island was once known as Lanka in ancient texts and later as Ceylon under colonial rule before gaining independence in 1948. Its strategic location made it a key trade hub connecting Asia and the Middle East. The earliest known civilization, the Anuradhapura Kingdom (377 BCE–1017 CE), introduced Buddhism, which remains deeply rooted in Sri Lankan culture. Magnificent stupas, ancient reservoirs, and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree are testaments to this era’s grandeur. The Polonnaruwa Kingdom (11th–13th century) followed, ushering in a golden age of art and architecture. In the 16th century, European powers arrived, starting with the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch and the British. The British ruled Sri Lanka from 1815 until its independence in 1948, modernizing infrastructure and introducing tea plantations, which remain a major industry today.Sri Lanka endured a civil war from 1983 to 2009 between the government and the Tamil Tigers, which shaped its recent history. Since the end of the war, the country has focused on rebuilding and economic growth. Today, Sri Lanka is famous for its stunning beaches, lush tea plantations, diverse wildlife, and UNESCO-listed heritage sites. From the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka blends history, culture, and natural beauty. With its warm hospitality, flavorful cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes, Sri Lanka continues to captivate travelers from around the world.
