All you need to know about Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is the Himalayan state that most Indian families picture when they think of the mountains: deodar and pine forests, snow peaks above the Beas and Parvati rivers, orchards, monasteries and hill towns with a colonial past. Shimla gives you the Ridge, Mall Road and the old railway, Manali and Solang Valley bring snow and adventure, Kasol has riverside cafes in the Parvati valley, and McLeod Ganj is the home of the Tibetan community in exile.

It is easy to reach from Chandigarh, Delhi and the Kullu-Manali airport, and a week is enough for a satisfying circuit. The Atal Tunnel now opens the Lahaul valley to a day trip from Manali. Tell us your dates, group size and budget, and we will build the itinerary around you.

Places covered: Shimla, Kufri, Manali, Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel, Sissu, Kullu, Naggar, Kasol, Manikaran, Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj. Spiti Valley can be planned separately on request.

Paragliding, river rafting, ropeway rides and gentle valley walks suit couples, friends and families alike.

  • Easy to reach from every metro

Chandigarh and Kullu-Manali have flights, and overnight Volvo buses run from Delhi, so you need only a few days of leave.

  • Culture and calm

Temples, Buddhist monasteries and gurudwaras sit beside apple orchards and village homestays.

Essential tips for travelling to Himachal Pradesh

  • Allow for slow mountain roads

Shimla to Manali takes 7 to 8 hours and Chandigarh to Manali 8 to 9 hours, so avoid tight connections on travel days.

  • Pack layers in every season

Evenings are cool even in summer, and Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel are much colder than Manali town.

  • Respect altitude sickness

Sissu and the Atal Tunnel are above 3,000 m and Rohtang Pass is near 4,000 m. Go slowly, drink water and come down if you feel unwell.

  • Watch the monsoon and winter roads

Landslides in July and August and heavy snow from December can close roads, including Rohtang Pass and parts of the Lahaul side.

  • Carry some cash

Mobile networks and ATMs are patchy in Kasol, Sissu and smaller villages, so keep notes for cafes and taxis.

  • Dress modestly at holy places

Cover your head at gurudwaras such as Manikaran, and follow the rules at temples and Buddhist monasteries.

Before you go

Rules change, so we confirm the latest details when you book

Visa information

Indian citizens need no visa for Himachal Pradesh, but every adult must carry a valid government photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, passport, driving licence or voter ID for hotel check-in. Rohtang Pass needs a vehicle permit that is issued within daily limits, and rules for other high-altitude places can change. We arrange permits and confirm the current rules at booking.

Health and safety tips

No compulsory vaccinations. Manali is at about 2,050 m and Solang Valley at about 2,500 m, while Sissu and the Atal Tunnel are above 3,000 m and Rohtang Pass is close to 4,000 m. Headache, nausea or breathlessness can be signs of altitude sickness, so go slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and descend if symptoms worsen. Roads are full of curves, so carry travel-sickness tablets and your regular medicines.

Currency and tipping

Carry some cash, as ATMs and UPI networks are patchy in Kasol, Sissu and Lahaul. Cards and UPI work in Shimla, Manali and McLeod Ganj hotels, shops and larger restaurants. Keep small notes for taxis, cafes and tips.

Himachal Pradesh travel FAQs

Quick answers to what travellers ask us most

How many days do I need for Himachal Pradesh?

Five to six nights cover Shimla and Manali or Manali with Kasol. Add two nights for Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, and allow extra travel time because the roads are slow.

When is the best time to visit?

March to June is pleasant and best for sightseeing and adventure. September to November has clear views, and December to February is for snow. July and August are monsoon months with a risk of landslides.

Can we see snow in Manali?

Snow usually falls from December to February in Manali, Solang Valley and Kufri. In other months, the Atal Tunnel and the Lahaul side can still show snow-covered peaks.

Is Rohtang Pass included in your itineraries?

No. Rohtang Pass opens only in summer, needs a vehicle permit within daily limits and can close at short notice, so we visit the Lahaul valley through the Atal Tunnel instead. Ask us if you want Rohtang added in season.

Can I include Spiti Valley?

Spiti is a high-altitude trip of its own, with Kaza at around 3,800 m and roads that close with snow. It needs a longer itinerary, so tell us your dates and we will plan it separately.

How do we reach Himachal from Chennai?

Fly to Chandigarh, usually with a stop in Delhi, then drive to Shimla or Manali. You can also fly to Delhi and take an overnight Volvo to Manali, or fly into Kullu-Manali airport.
