All you need to know about Andaman & Nicobar

The Andaman Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal, much nearer to Myanmar and Thailand than to the Indian mainland, yet they are part of India. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock is one of the country's most celebrated stretches of sand, the water is clear enough for snorkelling close to shore, and the coral reefs make this one of the easiest places in India to try scuba diving. Port Blair adds history, with Cellular Jail where freedom fighters were imprisoned and the colonial ruins of Ross Island.

Most visitors fly into Port Blair and take ferries to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep), where days pass in beach time, snorkelling and unhurried sunsets. Indian citizens need no passport or visa, which makes it an easy first island holiday. Ferries depend on the sea, so we plan with sensible buffers and keep the weather in mind throughout.

Places covered: Port Blair, Cellular Jail, Ross Island, North Bay, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), Radhanagar Beach, Elephant Beach, Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), Bharatpur Beach, Baratang, Chidiya Tapu

Essential tips for travelling to Andaman & Nicobar

  • Book early and expect ferry changes

Ferries between islands run on the sea's terms and can be delayed or cancelled. Keep a buffer before flying home.

  • Carry cash

ATMs are limited and sometimes out of cash on Havelock and Neil, and card or UPI payments depend on patchy networks.

  • Do not collect shells or coral

Removing coral, shells and sand from the islands is prohibited, so leave them where they are.

  • Respect tribal reserves

Some areas, including the Jarawa reserve on the Baratang road, have strict rules against stopping, photography and contact.

  • Plan scuba early in the stay

Avoid flying for at least 24 hours after a scuba dive, so schedule dives well before your departure day.

  • Expect limited mobile coverage

Networks and internet can be slow or absent on the smaller islands, so download maps and tickets before you go.

Before you go

Rules change, so we confirm the latest details when you book

Visa information

Indian citizens need no visa or passport for the Andaman Islands. Carry a valid government photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID or driving licence, which is checked for flights and ferries. The tourist islands in our packages, including Port Blair, Havelock and Neil, need no separate permit for Indian citizens, but tribal reserves and the Nicobar group are restricted. We arrange permits and confirm the current rules at booking.

Health and safety tips

No compulsory vaccinations from the mainland. Carry sunscreen, insect repellent, any regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit, as medical facilities on Havelock and Neil are limited. Scuba diving needs a medical declaration, and you should avoid flying for at least 24 hours after a dive. Take care with sea currents and coral cuts.

Currency and tipping

Take enough cash for the smaller islands, as ATMs can be out of order or empty and card or UPI payments rely on patchy networks. Port Blair has the most banks and ATMs. Tips are optional for drivers and guides.

Andaman & Nicobar travel FAQs

Quick answers to what travellers ask us most

How many days do I need for the Andaman Islands?

Five to six nights is comfortable for Port Blair, Havelock and Neil. A shorter weekend trip can cover Port Blair and Havelock, and seven nights lets you add Baratang and more beach time.

When is the best time to visit?

November to April is the main season, with calmer seas and better visibility, especially from December to March. June to September is the south-west monsoon, when ferries and water activities can be limited.

How do we reach the Andaman Islands?

Most travellers fly into Port Blair (IXZ) from Chennai, Kolkata or Delhi. Ferries from the mainland also run but take days. Transfers between Port Blair, Havelock and Neil are by ferry, which depends on the weather.

Can I enjoy the islands without scuba diving?

Yes. Many visitors spend their time on the beaches, on glass-bottom boats and snorkelling, and visiting Cellular Jail and Ross Island. Scuba is optional and suited to beginners with instructors.

Is the trip suitable for senior parents and children?

Yes, with a relaxed itinerary. Ferry crossings and some beach access involve steps and walking, so tell us about mobility needs and we can base you longer in fewer places.

What if the ferry is cancelled?

Ferries can be delayed or cancelled in rough weather. We rearrange the order of the programme where possible and advise a buffer day or a late flight on the last day. Costs of extra nights caused by weather are not included.
