Rishikesh suits you if you want rafting, yoga and river ghats, Mussoorie if you want a quick hill-station break close to Delhi, and Nainital if you want a lake town with more of a classic feel. A five-night trip can cover Rishikesh and one hill station comfortably, while a seven-night trip can stretch to all three if you accept some long drives.
These places lie in different parts of the state, so the order and the road time matter.
Rishikesh: river, yoga and adventure
Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves the mountains. It is a pilgrimage town, a yoga centre and an adventure base, all at once, and a good starting point if you land at Dehradun, which is an hour or so away by road. Haridwar is a short drive as well.

- Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula are the pedestrian suspension bridges across the river, near cafés, shops and ashrams.
- Triveni Ghat hosts an evening Ganga aarti that many visitors enjoy.
- River rafting is offered on stretches upstream of the town, with beginner and tougher grades. Rules and seasons are set locally, and rafting is generally closed in the monsoon.
- Yoga classes, meditation sessions and Ayurveda centres are available for short or long stays.
Many stays and eateries in the main riverside areas of Rishikesh are vegetarian and alcohol-free, so check what applies where you stay.
Mussoorie: the easy hill station
Mussoorie sits at roughly 2,000 metres, about one and a half to two hours from Dehradun, which makes it a popular weekend break from north India. It works for families, couples and anyone who wants cool air without an arduous journey.

Things to do:
- Stroll Mall Road for snacks, shops and views over the Doon Valley.
- Visit Kempty Falls, which can be crowded but is a quick stop.
- Ride the ropeway to Gun Hill, or take a short drive to Lal Tibba, the highest viewpoint in town.
- Walk the quieter Landour area for its bakeries, old cottages and forest paths.
Mussoorie gets busy on weekends and holidays, so a midweek stay is calmer.
Nainital: the lake town
Nainital is centred on a crescent-shaped lake, with boats, a promenade and a busy Mall Road. It is about seven to eight hours from Delhi by road, and closer to the rail station at Kathgodam, which is roughly an hour away.
- Go boating on Naini Lake, or just walk the shore.
- Ride the cable car to Snow View Point for the mountain panorama on clear days.
- Visit Bhimtal and Sattal nearby, which are quieter lakes with a more relaxed feel.
- Try bal mithai and local Kumaoni dishes in small eateries.
Nainital gets heavy tourist traffic in May and June, and traffic and parking can be difficult. Stay near the lake to avoid repeated climbs.
Combining the three
The three are not close together, so choose a route that does not double back:
- Rishikesh (2 nights) then Mussoorie (2 nights), connected by a drive of around three hours. This is the easiest pair.
- Mussoorie then Nainital would mean a long, full-day drive, so many travellers drop one of them.
- Rishikesh, Mussoorie, then a train or drive toward Nainital via Haridwar or Kathgodam, if you have seven nights and want variety.
Add Jim Corbett National Park near Ramnagar, on the way to Nainital, if you would like a safari. Corbett zones and booking rules vary by season, so check current availability.
When to go
March to June brings pleasant weather in the hills, though May and June are crowded. July to September is the monsoon, with rain, landslides and closed rafting. October and November have clear views and cool days. December to February is cold, and snow is possible in Mussoorie and Nainital in some years, which draws weekend crowds.
Treat road conditions as variable, especially after rain.
Who should go where
Families and first-timers usually enjoy Mussoorie. Couples often like Nainital's lake or a quieter lakeside stay at Bhimtal. Friends and solo travellers tend to enjoy Rishikesh for its activity and social energy.
