A good weekend getaway is a place you can reach in a few hours and enjoy for two or three nights without much leave. From Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi there are plenty of well-known options, from beaches and hill stations to old towns and national parks. This guide groups them by starting city, with rough travel times to help you plan.
Times below are approximate and depend on your route, the season and traffic, so check current flight, train and road conditions before you book.
How to pick a weekend destination
Start with the clock, not the map. If you leave on Friday evening and must be back for Monday morning, you have about two full days. Anything that eats more than half a day in each direction leaves little time on the ground.
Look for places with a direct flight, an overnight train or a drive of roughly three to five hours. Then think about what you want: sea air, cool hills, a little culture, or just a quiet room with a view.
From Chennai
Chennai has good choices both by road and by air.

- Pondicherry is roughly three to four hours by road, with a French-quarter feel, cafes and a calm seafront. Our weekend in Pondicherry lays out an easy plan.
- Kerala is reachable by a short flight or an overnight train to the coast and hills. Munnar, Alleppey and Kochi all work for a long weekend. See Kerala.
- Coorg, Ooty and Kodaikanal are hill stations that suit a road trip, though journey times can be long, so a Friday-night start helps.
From Bengaluru
Bengaluru is a convenient base for the south and for beaches.

- Goa is a short flight away and is the classic Bengaluru long-weekend plan. Our guide to Goa beyond the beach covers the quieter side. See Goa.
- Coorg, Chikmagalur and Wayanad are hill and coffee-country drives of a few hours, good for slow days and misty mornings.
- Hampi and Gokarna make a more offbeat weekend, with ruins in one and quiet beaches in the other.
From Mumbai
Mumbai is well placed for the coast and the Western Ghats.

- Goa is a short flight or a long overnight journey by road or rail, and works well when you want sun and sea.
- Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar and Alibaug are within a few hours by road, good for a monsoon weekend or a quick reset.
- Udaipur is a short flight and offers lakes and palaces, a gentle romantic option. See Rajasthan.
From Delhi
Delhi has the widest choice, thanks to the hills close by.
- Uttarakhand brings Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Nainital within a few hours to a night's journey. Our Uttarakhand guide helps you choose between them. See Uttarakhand.
- Himachal Pradesh offers Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala, usually with an overnight road or rail journey. Read how to choose between the Himachal towns. See Himachal Pradesh.
- Jaipur and Rajasthan are a few hours by road or train, ideal for forts, markets and food.
- Kashmir is a short flight from Delhi and works for a long weekend when you want mountains and lakes. See Kashmir.
Tips for making a short trip feel longer
Small choices make a big difference on a two-night trip.
- Travel at night when you can. An overnight train or a late flight turns travel time into sleep.
- Arrive in the morning. A morning landing gives you a whole first day.
- Pick one base. Moving hotels every night wastes hours.
- Book early for long weekends. Flights, trains and stays fill up quickly around holidays.
- Leave room for nothing. Keep one free evening with no plan at all.
Letting someone else plan it
If you would rather not juggle hotels, transfers and sightseeing, our weekend escapes are short fixed-departure trips with Friday starts, planned to bring you back for Monday. Each trip page lists what is included and what is not, so you can compare options easily.
Travel to the starting point is usually booked by you, so pick flights or trains that arrive early. You can also use the filters on the page to narrow trips by where you want to go, your budget and the number of nights. If you want something more tailored, such as a private weekend for friends or family, our custom trips team can plan it around your dates.
Still not sure where to go? Use mood as the guide. Beach weekends suit tired travellers who want to switch off. Hill weekends suit those who want cooler air and walks. Heritage weekends suit people who like wandering through old streets and forts.
You can also match the season: the coast is usually pleasant in the cooler months, hills are welcome in summer, and many places look their best after the rains.
Pick a city, pick a mood, and book a Friday. A good weekend is often only a few hours away.
