Georgia works best as a six to eight night trip built around three places: Tbilisi for the city, Kazbegi for the mountains and Kakheti for vineyards and old towns. It is small enough that you can see all three without long flights or rushed days, which is why it has become a favourite for Indian travellers wanting something different from Europe.
Why Georgia suits Indian travellers
Georgia packs mountains, old churches, wine and a good food culture into a country you can cross by road in a day. Distances are short, hospitality is warm and the scenery changes quickly.
It is also considerably gentler on a budget than Western Europe, though prices rise in summer. Always check the current visa and entry rules for Indian passport holders before you book, since these can change.
Tbilisi: the base for your trip
Plan two to three nights in the capital. The old town is a tangle of lanes, balconied houses and small cafes on the river bank. Walk up to Narikala Fortress for views over the rooftops, or take the cable car.

The Bridge of Peace, a curved glass-and-steel footbridge, looks best lit up at night. The sulphur bathhouses in the Abanotubani district are a local tradition; private rooms are the comfortable option if you prefer privacy.
Do not miss a slow evening on Rustaveli Avenue, and try to fit in the Dry Bridge flea market on a weekend morning if you enjoy antiques and odd souvenirs.
Mtskheta: an easy half-day
Just outside Tbilisi, Mtskheta is one of the country's oldest towns and a spiritual centre for Georgian Christians. The Jvari Monastery sits on a hilltop above the meeting of two rivers, and the cathedral in town is also worth a visit. It is usually done in a morning or afternoon on the way to the mountains.
Kazbegi: the high mountains
Kazbegi, also known as Stepantsminda, is the highlight for many visitors. The classic drive from Tbilisi follows the Georgian Military Road and takes roughly three to four hours with stops.

Along the way you can stop at:
- Ananuri Fortress, a walled complex beside a reservoir
- Gudauri, a ski resort that is also scenic in summer
- A viewpoint near the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, with a wide mountain panorama
At the end of the road, the Gergeti Trinity Church stands on a ridge with Mount Kazbek behind it. You can reach it by a steep hike of a couple of hours, by 4x4 or by a short walk from the car park depending on conditions.
Weather in the mountains changes fast. Clouds can hide the peak completely, so build in a spare morning if you can.
Kakheti: wine country
Kakheti, in the east, is where most Georgian wine is produced. Allow a full day or one night. The pretty hilltop town of Sighnaghi has cobbled streets, city walls and views over the Alazani valley. Nearby, the Bodbe Monastery is a quiet place with gardens.

Many wineries offer tastings and show you the traditional clay-vessel method called qvevri. If you do not drink, ask about grape juice, bread baking and cheese-making, which are often part of the same stop. For more on the food side, read our Georgian food guide.
How many days and what order
A comfortable plan for most travellers:
- Days 1 to 2: Arrive, explore Tbilisi old town and the baths.
- Day 3: Mtskheta and the drive to Kazbegi.
- Day 4: Gergeti Trinity Church and a mountain walk, then back to Tbilisi.
- Day 5: Drive to Kakheti, wine tasting and Sighnaghi.
- Day 6: Return to Tbilisi and free time, or a day trip to a nearby monastery.
Add one or two nights if you want to reach the Black Sea coast at Batumi, which is a full day of travel from Tbilisi by road or a short domestic flight.
Best time to go
Late spring and early autumn are widely considered the most comfortable, with mild days in the cities and clearer mountain air. Summer is warm in Tbilisi but pleasant in the mountains. Winter is cold, with snow in Kazbegi and the ski areas, and some mountain roads can close for a while.

Practical points:
- Carry some local currency and a card; check current exchange rates before you go.
- Roads in the mountains are good in places and rough in others. Hire a driver rather than self-driving.
- Vegetarian options exist, especially cheese breads, beans and vegetable dishes, but tell your guide in advance.
